NO. OF BIRDS: More than 25000 wintering

DESCRIPTION:

Huge area North of the Embalse de Orellana, including many irrigated areas devoted mainly to maize, but also with rice. There are some areas of "dehesa" (clear oak-wooded Quercus rotundifolia forest), with pastures and cereal, and also slightly undulated cereal fields.
The former area of Zorita lies in the northern sector, between the rivers Pizarroso and Ruecas, and is mainly occupiedby dehesas with pasture fields, with some irrigated surfaces and ceral fields.
The former area of Embalse de Orellana
, to the south, is an undulated dehesa on the left (southern) margin of Orellana dam, and extended to the south, up the Zújar river.

FEEDING AREAS:

Maize stubbles, rice fields and oak-wooded dehesas in the core area; dehesas with pasture and cereal fields in the Zorita and Orellana sectors.

ROOST: Several different roost are used simultaneously and scatered in the area, from the inlets of the Pizarroso river to the suthern bank of the Orellana dam.

PHENOLOGY: This is currently the main wintering area in Spain. The increase in numbers of wintering birds has been favoured probably by the high food availability on maize stubbles and rice fields. It is also used as a staging area during both migratory periods, by many birds not wintering there.
