Crane
Information from the Czech Republic
by Lubomir
Peske
Common crane is a rare species
for the Czech Republic. The first breeding occurred in late 80's. Less than 20
pairs did breed in the northern half of Bohemia, but this number has been
continuously increasing. Czech breeding pairs constitute the southern limit for
European breeding population.
As a preliminary result of ringing, both conventional and satellite tracking
show that Czech birds do migrate to Germany and then to southern France. In some
years single birds were observed spending winter in the Czech Republic.
