REPORT from Years 1999-2002

Sketch Map of the area

Succesful breeding of Common Cranes Grus grus took place at Fochteloërveen, Friesland, The Netherlands, in spring and summer 2001 (one young was raised). Birds were summering in the same general area in 1999 and 2000 and breeding was suspected in 1999. This is the first confirmed breeding for the Netherlands. The species may have been a breeding bird in the 16th and 17th century but there is no conclusive evidence. (HF)
