Tracking radiomarked German and Estonian cranes during winter:
migratory routes and wintering areas of northern birds
Javier A. Alonso, Juan C. Alonso, Günter Nowald and Aivar Leito
Abstract. We have been colour-banding and radio-marking German (since 1995) and Estonian (since 1999) cranes in order to study their requirements in relation to staging and wintering areas. The general shift of the whole European wintering area is here considered at a small individual scale.
We are also interested in the changes in wintering localities, when the juveniles become independent, as well as on the other hand, in the faithfullness of certainbirds, mainly adults to their winter territories. The use of alternative migratory routes by the individuals of different geographic origins will
still need an improvement of the radio-marking effort in certain regions of northern Europe. The Spanish Air Forces have been making a crucial contribution to this research.

The migratory routes and staging areas of some German and Estonian radio- marked birds are being studied. Some of the Estonian cranes choose the Central European flyway to fly through Hungary and
probably to Tunisia. German birds can change their wintering localities when they come back to Spain on their second and successive winters, after emancipating from their parents. |
