Migratory routes and staging areas of the cranes wintering in Israel:
new discoveries from satellite tracked birds

Dan Alon, Javier A. Alonso and Juan C. Alonso

Abstract.
With the assistance of satellite transmitters some Common Cranes have been tracked along their migratory routes, from the wintering grounds in the Hula Valley, northern Israel, to their breeding areas in northern Russia, 6500km north of the wintering areas in the Hula Valley. The project is sponsored by Lufthansa and Euronatur.

The migratory route and staging areas of some satellite tracked birds have been dicovered. The breeding areas, as well as and the timing of the different anual cycle phases will now be studied.
